the other in the functional biochemistry of the nervous system, from
the University of Henri Poincaré, Nancy; currently she is

research director at the French National Institute for Health and
Medical Research (INSERM) in Strasbourg. The research Astrid has
carried out answers the following questions:
What amount of coffee is good for your health? Is there a difference
between the impact of caffeine on men and women? How true are various
myths and prejudices linking coffee to diseases, tumors, and pregnancy?
It also covers many other subjects that are usually overlooked by
coffee lovers.

[17.02.2010, 11:00] 2nd Moscow
International Coffee Forum was held! ...
On February 8, 2010, the 2nd Moscow International Coffee Forum took
place in the InfoSpace information and exhibition center.
Expectations of the 2010 Coffee Forum participants varied greatly.
The repeat sponsors and partners of the event secured opportunities for
efficient meetings with colleagues and reaffirmed their status of the
national coffee industry leaders. At the same time there were many
newcomers to the Forum. Their representatives found participation in
this important industry event a unique and useful experience: "There is
simply no alternative to such a forum, which brings together everything
concerning the coffee business," Marina Sedyki of the Buhler AG Moscow
Office says.
As a unique industry information resource, the industry magazine
Coffee and Tea in Russia sponsors the Forum together with the Internet
news site www.coffeetea.ru. The event was supported by such major
industry institutions as the Rusteacoffee Association and the
Organization of Coffee Manufacturers in Russia.
The Forum's
primary sponsor was KLD Coffee Importers Ltd, which since 2006 has been
a partner and Russian representative of Neumann Kaffee Gruppe, world
leader in green coffee sales.
The well-known Colombian coffee brand Ambassador was the official
beverage of the 2nd Moscow International Coffee Forum. Sucafina S. A.,
which represents the brand Ambassador in Russia, decided to sponsor
coffee breaks at the largest industry event. Such major members of the
global and national coffee industry as Buhler AG, GEA Niro, Goglio SpA,
Orimi Trade, IMA Flavour, Probat, and SFT Trading also were among the
Forum sponsors.
It was due to the reliable Forum partners that the
event went off at the top level. While formulating the program and
setting the key subject of the Forum, the Organizing Committee took
into account one of the main concerns of most of the coffee market
players: what the next stage of the Russian coffee market development
was going to be like and whether a significant increase of regional
interest in coffee in Russia could give an impetus to further market
development. A Round Table Conference focused on this issue. A live
discussion brilliantly conducted by its participants under the guidance
of Igor Vitel, a famous TV and radio host, left no doubt about the
urgency of the questions raised. Professionals from all industry
segments met to look for new avenues of the Russian coffee market
development and investigate and thoroughly analyze regional growth
prospects. The discussion made it clear that there were more questions
than answers and raised new subjects for discussion in the business
community. Most of the participants agreed that the coffee industry was
briskly growing in the regions; however, so far all achievements are
gained in spite of rather than due to the existing operating
conditions. That means that further development will require changing
the current situation and keeping up the search for new solutions.
Many
Forum participants mentioned in their responses that the event was a
perfect venue for the coffee business community. "The Forum made a very
good impression; organization was excellent and the reports
interesting. Such events are very important as the coffee community
should meet more often to understand the situation within and without
the country. A common view of market development prospects must be
developed. The coffee market in Russia was shaped mostly through
private initiative, and the task of all those engaged in the industry
is to ensure normal functioning of the community for the market to
develop further," Andrey Savinov, General Director of SFT Trading, said
about the Forum.
Over 400 people participated in the Forum in 2010, including
representatives of coffee importers, roasters, packing companies,
distributors, retailers, the HoReCa sector, associations, government
institutions, etc. Mr. N?stor Osorio, Executive Director of the
International Coffee Organization bringing together 77 producer and
consumer countries, opened the Forum. The Forum's busy program allowed
its participants to examine the global coffee market review data and
discover how the global coffee consumption trends impact the Russian
market and the national coffee industry.
The program included
reports and presentations describing up-to-date industry tendencies and
technologies. Evgeny Yasin, Scientific Supervisor of the Higher School
of Economics and Director of the Expert Institute, reviewed the current
economic situation in Russia. The HoReCa sector presented a report on
regional coffee house chains. A special program was prepared for the
barista: the magazine Coffee and Tea in Russia in collaboration with
the Russian Office of the Speciality Coffee Association of Europe
(SCAE) arranged a cup tasting, while the tasting session Cup of
Excellence held in Russia for the first time in partnership with
Montana Coffee was one of the most anticipated events. Unique seminars
on the subject of Brazilian Coffee and the concepts of Sustainability,
Fair Trade, Global Coffee Village, and Organic Coffee left no one
indifferent. The Coffee and Health seminar sponsored by Orimi Trade,
leader in the roasted/ground coffee sector, was innovative in both form
and content. Astrid Nehlig, research director at the French National
Institute for Health and Medical Research in Strasbourg, INSERM, and a
leading authority in the subject of influence of coffee on human
health, laid bare many unknown facts regarding this highly topical
subject.
The day loaded with events and meetings ended with a gala dinner.
The informal atmosphere of the evening in Zurab Tsereteli's Art Gallery
made it possible not only to discuss the day’s results but
also to
truly enjoy jazz music and works of visual art. The evening program
included award ceremonies for winners of the SCAE final national
championships (Latte Art, Cup Tasting and Barista Championship).
Lottery winners received generous gifts from KLD, Montana Coffee,
Ambassador, Orimi Trade, and Buhler. Ivan Petrov was found the Forum's
best cup taster and got an annual subscription to the magazine Coffee
and Tea in Russia and gifts from the Ambassador company and SCAE.
The evening culminated in the nomination "Person of the Year -
Coffee King/Queen" by the Coffee and Tea in Russia, awarded to people
who made a significant contribution to national coffee industry
development. Valentina Kazachkova (chief process engineer of Montana
Coffee) got a wonderful hand-made crown as the first Russian winner of
the World Cup Tasting Championship (Cologne, Germany, 2009) as she had
demonstrated that the coffee market and coffee quality in Russia are at
the highest level.
The evening was spectacularly concluded with a
splendid coffee cake bearing the logo of the 2nd Moscow International
Coffee Forum served to the guests.
With opinions of many Forum
participants as a basis, the Organizing Committee has already begun to
analyze issues on the industry’s agenda in the short term,
which means
that the 3rd Moscow International Coffee Forum is not far off.
